Here’s How to Enable VoLTE on Your Xiaomi Phone - 3G Network Shutdown

Mobile providers across New Zealand are beginning to switch off their 3G networks. We did a full run-down of what's happening and how to be prepared, so be sure to check out our article - 3G Networks Shutting Down in NZ, Here's What to Do.

If you're using a Xiaomi phone, this could mean that you may no longer be able to make or receive calls, unless VoLTE is enabled. This includes emergency calling, so it’s essential to be prepared ahead of time.

The good news? It’s easy to turn on, and we’ll show you how.

What is VoLTE, and why does it matter?

VoLTE stands for Voice over LTE. In simple terms, it means your phone will make calls over the 4G network instead of 3G. This brings some great benefits:

  • Clearer call quality

  • Faster connection times when making calls

  • No slowdowns to your mobile data while you’re on a call

With 3G on its way out, VoLTE is essential to keep calling without interruption.

Xiaomi will release an update soon...

Xiaomi has confirmed that a software update will be rolling out to enable VoLTE automatically on supported models here in New Zealand.

But if you'd prefer to get in early, or want to be sure everything's working before the network changes happen - you can turn it on manually right now.

How to Enable VoLTE on Your Xiaomi Phone

Follow these simple steps (or click here if you prefer a video format):

  1. Open the Phone app (where you dial numbers)

  2. Type in: *#*#86583#*#*

  3. You will see a pop-up at the bottom of your screen which says "VoLTE carrier check disabled". The VoLTE option should now appear in your Settings.

  4. Now go to Settings and tap on SIM cards & mobile networks

  5. Select your active SIM (e.g. “SIM 1” or your provider’s name)

  6. Scroll down to find VoLTE or Make calls using VoLTE and toggle it ON (if not already enabled)

  7. And you’re done!

If you have followed the instructions above carefully, your Xiaomi phone is now good to go. However, if VoLTE still does not connect, you may need to contact your network operator (Spark, One NZ, 2degrees) to confirm your SIM card and account have been correctly provisioned for 4G Calling / VoLTE services. One NZ and 2degrees SIM cards should be automatically set up for VoLTE. If you are a Spark or Skinny customer, you may need to contact them for one-off manual provisioning.

Bonus tip: Enable Wi-Fi Calling too

Wi-Fi Calling (also known as VoWiFi) lets you make and receive calls using your home or office Wi-Fi - a great option when mobile reception is weak indoors.

1. Open the Phone app (where you dial numbers)

Thank you for this guide, my 14 Ultra stopped working for calls only this last week and I didn't even notice since I hardly call - no notification from Spark. If a 111 emergency came up I would not have been able to use my handset, that's the worst part.

I have the same issue as RichardH528 - a message warning that my Redmi may not work with emergency calls. According to NZ Telecommunications Forum "There are also a small number of devices that can use data, send texts, and make regular calls, but have not been configured by the device manufacturers to connect to emergency calling over 4G" One keeps warning me of this problem with Xiaomi Redmi phones.

Hi Chiko, As below, this would be best to check with ONE NZ. From what we understand, the small number of affected devices should not include Xiaomi phones. Hope you can resolve this.

My Redmi Note 14 Pro 5G is all working since the shut down but I am still getting annoying messages from One saying that my device is not approved and I need to "upgrade" to an approved device so I can make calls. The texts are one thing but trying to make a call having to listen to an annoying message before I can proceed is not ideal.

1st April 2026, and this article is the secret sauce. Xiaomi Note 10 Pro(Purchased at PBTech) would not make calls after midnight. VoLTE was "Preferred" in settings but still no worky. After entering *#*#86583#*#* I got message voLTE was disabled, and hence we presume is now *enabled*! It worked, Can now make phone calls. Side note could send SMS and use mobile data, that was unaffected.

Is this still an issue with the latest 15 and 17 Ultra? Planning a new phone purchase but travel sometimes and don't want to have to figure this out if I'm overseas.

Hi David, Can confirm that all new release Xiaomi phones (that are officially sold in NZ) since the 15 series have NZ VoLTE enabled out of the box. Based on that, we can't speak for the 17 Ultra as it hasn't been released in NZ yet.

Hi Michael. If it's saying "number not in use", the phone is making a call rather than entering a code. That would usually mean either the wrong digits have been entered or it is not a Xiaomi phone.
