The Logitech G915 X is a premium gaming keyboard that builds on the strengths of its predecessor, the G915, with subtle yet worthwhile upgrades. A faster actuation point, tougher keycaps, and improved build quality make for welcome enhancements, even if they aren’t revolutionary.

Designed for gamers, the G915 X offers customisation options, versatile connectivity, and impressive battery life, maintaining its status as one of the best high-end keyboards on the market.

If you’re looking for a sleek keyboard for gaming and even typing, the G915 X is definitely worth a look.

Competition

The Logitech G915 X is a premium keyboard positioned at the higher end of the gaming keyboard market, competing with the Razer BlackWidow V4 Pro, the Corsair K100, and the SteelSeries Apex Pro.

So, what’s new?

The G915 X is the successor to the G915, which was released in 2019. Logitech has introduced several changes and improvements here.

The first is the switch design. The actuation point in the G915 X is 1.3mm compared to the G915’s 1.5mm. This means keys are faster at identifying a keypress, which makes typing and gaming feel more responsive.

The G915 X now uses double-shot Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT) caps. These are more durable, more resistant to finger oils and they won’t wear down as quickly as the Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) caps of the G915.

The build quality has been improved. The aluminium top plate is now 1.5mm thick, as opposed to the G915’s 1.2mm plate, meaning the keyboard is sturdier.

It has a larger battery, offering 20% more battery life, and finally, Logitech has introduced a new feature called KEYCONTROL which allows you to bind up to 15 functions per key. An improvement on the basic macro assignments of the G915.

Design

This is a well-built gaming keyboard. It has a strong plastic base and the 1.5mm aluminium top plate not only makes it feel more premium, it adds to its sturdiness. It’s also very thin, when lying flat it’s only 23mm high.

It utilises Logitech’s GL Mechanical switches which are designed to provide a responsive typing and gaming experience while maintaining a slim form factor. These enable the slim 23mm profile and they work very well. Coming from the Razer BlackWidow V4 Pro where the switches are higher, I was worried I wouldn’t be able to use the G915 X accurately, but after a day’s usage, I was surprised to find I was able to type more accurately with it.

In regard to how it feels to use, this will all come down to personal preference. You can get three different types of switches, GL Tactile switches are designed for those who want a slight bump when typing and an audible click, GL Linear switches don’t provide a bump or a click, and GL Clicky switches provide a strong bump and a loud click. I’m not too fussed about this sort of thing, but it’s nice to have options.

The keycaps are double-shot PBT keycaps. Two layers of plastic have been moulded together meaning the characters are part of the keycap itself. This means they won’t wear through usage. It’s great, especially if you’re an intense gamer and like me, you subconsciously press the keys harder when you want to go faster, dodge quicker or hit harder.

The keyboard is well-spaced and comfortable to use. The keys feel closer together than other keyboards I’ve used, but I didn’t have any issues when typing or gaming. It has nine extra “G” keys that you can bind to pretty much anything and a panel at the top providing quick access to Bluetooth (which allows you to change between devices), Lightspeed (which allows you to connect to the included USB-A dongle), Game Mode (which turns off options like the windows key while gaming) and RGB brightness options. There are media controls with a volume roller on the right as well. Everything you need is here.

Each key has its own RGB light, and these can be customised within the Logitech G app with support for up to nearly 17 million colours.

My only disappointment with the design is it doesn’t come with a palm rest, if you need one, you’ll have to buy one separately. I can recommend this HyperX Wrist Rest For Full Size Keyboard.

Customisation

Using the Logitech G Hub app, you can customise every key to your liking. It’s quite impressive how much you can change.

Essentially, you have three layers. The base layer, which is the keyboard as it is, the Function layer, which has an additional set of customisation options and the G-shift layer which adds a third layer of customisation.

To initiate the Function and G-Shift layers, all you need to do is hold the Function or your assigned G-Shift button, and the keyboard will change between each layer. It sounds complicated but it’s very easy to do within the G Hub app.

Logitech calls this KEYCONTROL and with the combination of different profiles, it allows you to customise each key with up to 15 different assignments. That’s an impressive number of options. You’ll be able to get this keyboard set up exactly how you want.

Of course, you can customise the RGB lights within the app, there are several preset animations you can choose from, and you can even customise each key individually. It’s very easy and straightforward, however, I found creating my own animation quite convoluted and confusing. I just ended up using the presets, not a biggie.

Connectivity

The G915 X supports what Logitech calls Tri-Mode connectivity, this means you can connect to the keyboard using one of three methods, LIGHTSPEED wireless which is very fast and requires a USB-A dongle plugged into your computer, Bluetooth and wired.

I particularly like that you can seamlessly switch between LIGHTSPEED and Bluetooth by using the buttons at the top of the keyboard. It means you can connect to multiple devices and quickly switch between them.

LIGHTSPEED is the best option here. It’s quick and responsive and I didn’t notice any lagging or delayed inputs when playing fast-paced games like The Finals. You will need to use the included USB-A dongle though. Fortunately, there’s a compartment on the back of the keyboard to put this in when you’re not using it.

I also like that you can now connect Logitech devices to the same LIGHTSPEED dongle, so you don’t have to have three dongles, one for your headset, one for your keyboard and one for your mouse. This is great for those who are heavily invested in the Logitech ecosystem. Just make sure the other devices utilise LIGHTSPEED.

Battery

The G915 X has a very good battery. Your mileage will vary based on your RGB light usage. If you have them on at 100% brightness you’ll get just under 40 hours of usage, at 50% brightness that will double to roughly 80 hours and with them off entirely, you’ll get months of usage without having to charge the keyboard.

If you do need to charge it there’s a USB-C port on the face of the keyboard and you can charge it from zero to full in just over 3 hours.

Verdict

The Logitech G915 X refines the already excellent G915 with smart, subtle upgrades. The actuation point is reduced to 1.3 mm, making keypresses more responsive, while tougher double-shot PBT keycaps and a thicker 1.5 mm aluminium top plate enhance durability and feel.

Its Tri-Mode connectivity allows seamless switching between devices via LIGHTSPEED, Bluetooth, and wired options, and the battery life impresses too, with up to 40 hours at full brightness, doubling if you dim the RGB lights.

Customisation is extensive with KEYCONTROL letting you assign up to 15 functions per key using Logitech’s G Hub app. And most importantly, it feels very nice to use. Typing and gaming are comfortable and incredibly responsive.

Overall, the G915 X builds on a solid foundation, remaining one of the best premium keyboards you can get. If you’re after top-notch performance and flexibility, it’s an easy choice.
