Samsung have just lifted the curtain on their latest Samsung 980 M.2 NVMe SSD, adding to their range of new releases which already includes the awesome 870 EVO Sata SSD and 980 PRO PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSD.
This is a significant redesign of their M.2 NVMe SSD, from the circuit architecture to passive and active elements. As the result of this optimisation, the new Samsung 980 SSD boasts outstanding power efficiency - measured as 54% better (Performance/Watt), compared to that of 970 EVO, while still providing the same great performance level!
The new Samsung 980 M2 NVMe 1TB SSD delivers up to 3,500 MB/s and 3,000 MB/s for sequential read and write respectively, the performance of 980 is remarkable since this provides outstanding NVMe performance of PCIe 3.0 with DRAMless architecture. Thanks to the Host Memory Buffer (HMB) feature, and upgraded Intelligent TurboWrite 2.0, users can experience the supreme performance for an even longer time than the previous Samsung 970 EVO family of M.2 NVMe SSD.
The first of the new Samsung 980 M2 NVMe SSD expected to New Zealand will come in three capacity options.
As usual, the larger capacity of the solid state drives, the better the performance we’ll get, in this case the 250GB tops out at 2,900MB/s, the 500GB at 3,100MB/s and 1TB, as mentioned above, reaches the 3,500MB/s mark in sequential read - that’s as fast as the current Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB version, but with new efficiency benefits.
Warranty wise we again get a massive 5 years or Total Bytes Written protection, whichever comes first. The TBW varies a bit depending on capacity, as detailed in the chart below.

Working on the PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe 1.4 interface, without the need for a PCIe 4.0 connection (look to the 980 Pro if you want that), these new Samsung 980 SSD are ready to work with a massive range of Intel 10th gen desktop PC - this new design is ideal for use laptops too, with a smooth back for unobstructed installation. The DTG (Dynamic Thermal Guard) tech proactively works to minimise the risk of overheating, a nickel coating on the controller also helps to dissipate heat faster during heavy workload use and a heat spreader with an integrated thin copper film dissipates heat more efficiently.
It’s great to see this new SSD enjoys the same levels of quality and reliability for which Samsung is known, because users can now push their storage further than ever - the Samsung Magician Software suit, with the March 6.3 update, now supports a feature named “Full Power Mode”, and with this you can make your 980 runs at the peak level for nonstop, consistent high performance, also of note for those upgrading, the Samsung Data Migration Software will help to move data across to your new SSD with ease.
