The Huawei FreeBuds Pro are Huawei’s flagship True Wireless Stereo (TWS) earphones, and offer intelligent, dynamic noise-cancellation. They deliver the best noise-cancelling performance yet on a Huawei product with an industry-leading noise cancellation rating of 40dB.

The FreeBuds Pro are often compared to the Apple AirPods Pro, but come in a bit cheaper, and have been specifically designed for the Android platform (they’ll still pair with iPhones perfectly fine, but Android users will have more control with the AI Life app). Let’s take a quick look at what they have on offer!

Huawei ditched the open-ear buds that we saw with the Huawei FreeBuds 3 for a more comfortable design complete with silicone eartips. This seals your ear canals for that all-important sound isolation, and also ensures the buds fit more securely and comfortably (there are different sized tips for different sized ear canals).

General Mode - Greatly reduces ambient noises in hustling streets or crowded cafes for an immersive experience.

The silicone tips have passive noise cancellation covered, but what about the active noise cancellation? The FreeBuds Pro 40dB ANC works across three different levels - Ultra, Cozy, and General. You can switch between these manually, or leave it up to the buds to do it dynamically using AI. Here’s how Huawei describes each of the modes.

Ultra Mode - Lay back with deeply enhanced noise cancellation when travelling. Lose yourself in the music and stay away from the disturbance.

Cozy Mode - Keeps you focused by reducing noises from paper flipping, typing, computers and occasional conversations in the workplace, libraries and other quiet environments.

General Mode - Enjoy the immersive music or game sounds in bustling streets or crowded cafés as the ambient noises are greatly reduced.

Additionally, the FreeBuds Pro have two extra modes that let you reconnect with your surroundings without taking the earbuds out. Awareness Mode enables hear-through to bring you back to your surroundings; and Voice Mode reduces ambient sounds to make human voices stand out (so you don’t miss the airport broadcasts or a quick chat with a friend passing by).

When it comes to the actual sound these earbuds produce, you can expect a well-balanced sound profile with full-bodied bass. Thanks to the high magnetic density and dynamic driver, the FreeBuds Pro delivers surging bass and impressive noise reduction. And based on the real-time signal changes received by the in-ear microphones, the EQ adjusts immediately to keep the sound and timbre balanced, regardless of how you wear the earbuds or your posture.

Make yourself heard even when whispering, just take off one earbud and pinch the stem twice within five seconds to use it as a microphone.

The microphones on the FreeBuds Pro are pretty impressive too! They feature a three-mic system, with two outward-facing microphones to capture the direction of your voice, and one inward-facing microphone to ensure you’re heard clearly. It’ll certainly be an upgrade on your phone’s internal mic, and it will be ideal for video calls and meetings. Covering a frequency range of up to 20 Hz with stable transmission, it also makes a great gadget for enthusiastic vloggers who want high-quality recordings.

With noise cancellation turned off, a single charge provides up to 8-hours of listening, and up to 36 hours when coupled with the charging case. Turning on noise cancellation cuts this back to 5-hours of listening, and up to 22 hours with the charging case.

The Huawei FreeBuds Pro stack up pretty well against the Apple AirPods Pro (as they’re often compared to). They offer a quality combination of audio, active noise cancellation, and mic-system, all at a relatively affordable price. A great contender for your next pair of true wireless earphones - particularly if you’re running on an Android device!

The Huawei FreeBuds Pro are available at PB Tech in two sleek colours: Silver Frost and Carbon Black.
