If you're running with a new model motherboard, specifically one with PCIe 4.0 slots for M.2 SSD storage, there is a new 980 PRO M.2 SSD incoming from Samsung and it's extremely fast. Designed for hardcore gamers and tech-savvy users, the 980 PRO offers high-performance bandwidth and throughput for heavy-duty applications in gaming, graphics, data analytics, and more.
The spec sheet is looking very impressive for these new SSD options, with extremely high read speeds showing that the 980 PRO pushes the limits of what SSDs can do, though these speeds to scale with the size of SSD used, so go big for the top end performance. The 980 PRO comes in the standard M.2 2280 form factor, so it can be easily plugged into a range of modern desktops right now, and hopefully soon, some laptops too, those will need to get support for the latest PCIe 4.0 storage devices first.
This is Samsung’s first-ever consumer PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD, the 980 PRO is an optimal choice for users who work with content, play graphics-heavy games or otherwise use their PC for data-intensive applications. Delivering sequential read and write speeds as high as 7,000 MB/s and 5,000 MB/s respectively, in addition to random read and write speeds of up to 1,000K IOPS, the 980 PRO is said to deliver speeds twice as fast as PCIe 3.0 SSDs and up to 12.7 times as fast as SATA SSDs.
“Over the years, Samsung has continuously challenged the limits of high-speed flash memory storage solutions,” said Dr. Mike Mang, vice president of Memory Brand Product Biz at Samsung Electronics. “The new 980 PRO SSD reflects our continuing commitment to delivering exceptional products consumers have come to expect from Samsung.”
Embedded with Samsung's cutting-edge thermal control algorithm, 980 PRO manages heat on its own to deliver durable and reliable performance, while minimizing performance fluctuations during extended usage. To ensure stable performance, the 980 PRO uses nickel coating to help manage the controller's heat level and a heat spreader label to deliver effective thermal control of the NAND chip.
Samsung Magician software allows users to monitor drive health, optimize performance, protect valuable data, and receive updates to help ensure you're always getting the best performance out of your SSD.
The Samsung SSD 980 PRO is expected to come in 250GB, 500GB and 1TB versions, with a massive 2TB capacity model coming out closer to the end of this year.
Keep your eyes on the Samsung Store for the latest!

Another reason to go with AMD X570... did intel even put the PCIe gen 4 slot onto their new motherboards?

Nothing in the Intel range looks good for this, even the expernsive Z490 AORUS master doesn't have a slot.

Looks like PCIe 4.0 is Z490 but only AOrus Xtreme, MSi Godlike & Unify. Sauce https://forum.gamer.com.tw/Co.php?bsn=60030&sn=2260771

That's a great link, chart at the bottom shows theZ490 Aorus Master too.

I'm reading up on this now, seems that even with a compatible motherboard the Intel CPU doesn't actually support the PCIe 4.0 storage device. Is that correct?

I can't find any information from Intel saying they support this on a CPU level. Lots of articles saying that Intel do not support it and the only compatible options are AMD X570 and B550 motherboards

Yeah i ended up there too. Some stuff about motherboards supporting it when the 11th gen intel CPU releases.
