Great experiences are born out of great partnerships. A new proprietary accessory for those gearing up with the upcoming Xbox Series X|S gaming consoles is on its way to New Zealand now via Seagate - and while it might look super small compared to regular external game drives, it sure can store a lot of games (all at lightning speeds)!
The Xbox Series X is their most powerful console ever, and Seagate created the Seagate Storage Expansion Card alongside the Xbox team with no compromise. This partnership means that when you plug this storage card into any Xbox Series X|S console, you’re getting all the speed and power Xbox has dreamed up, thanks to Xbox’s Velocity Architecture. Once a game is installed, enjoy playing at home or take the new Xbox SSD over to a friends house to play on their console too – regardless of whether they have an Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S.
Via Jeff Fochtman, Seagate senior vice president “Seagate is thrilled to be a key player in next-generation gaming. With a new standard in performance, games will be more dynamic, visually stunning, and more immersive than ever. Seagate's Xbox Series X Storage Expansion Card technology delivers additional game storage at peak speeds, replicating the console’s internal SSD experience. We are proud to join forces with Xbox and can’t wait to help gamers immerse themselves in the high-fidelity experience.”

Quick Resume enables players to seamlessly switch between multiple titles and resumes instantly from where you last left off — always the same speed from the custom PCIe Gen4x2 NVMe expansion card and the internal SSD.
The new Xbox Series X Seagate Expansion SSD is coming to NZ soon, keep your eyes on the Seagate Store for the latest!

Would this be equivalent speeds to a normal SATA SSD, A PCIE 3 or PCIE 4 SSD?

The Xbox console specs list it as a having a 1TB Custom NVME SSD, and this external drive is said to have the same speed, so I think https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/HDDSE12130/Seagate-BarraCuda-510-1TB-M2-NVMe-SSDRead-Up-to-34 could be a comparison in PC terms, but that's just speculation from me.

Will the old external game drives still work or do I need to get this too?

I'm sure the old drives will work for older games just fine but the new ones probably need the fast storage to run properly
