This isn’t a hard sell - if you’re getting the new 8K ready hardware then you will need a cable that can connect it, and we can’t output 7680x4320 resolution at 60Hz without the right cable. Distance is also going to be a factor to consider as we'll be pushing an incredible 33 million pixels each second, and it needs to reach our commercial display, gaming monitors or fancy new TVs Samsung have been busy showing off.
With the new range of laptop docking stations, and the new RTX 3000 series graphics cards that were just announced both supporting the HDMI 2.1 port specification that is ready to output 8K at 60FPS, we’re going to need some new cables to connect them to new 8K displays.
It’s not just a question of quality too, there are a few key specification you might be asked to look for in your hardware manuals, High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) compliant for example, will allow the cable to be used in more situations, with a capture device, extender or switch for example.
Look closely and you’ll see some cables are referenced as being HDMI with Active Optical Cables (AOC HDMI), this means it uses fiber optic technology to transport the digital HDMI signal, allowing the signal to be carried further than with a traditional copper cable - so longer 8K ready cables are available, just be sure to check for that AOC too!
