New Samsung 870 EVO SSD have landed in New Zealand, bringing with them a range of improvements and new storage capacities to choose from!
In the world of solid state drives, it's been hard to miss the Samsung 860 EVO series, it has lived on the top-sellers lists since its release and is currently enjoying having the most reviews of any SSD, and the best reviews.
The 870 EVO series is the Samsung’s latest model of the world’s best-selling SATA SSD series, with the latest sixth-generation V-NAND technology and the new MKX controller. The sustained performance has been measured at up to 30% higher than the predecessor 860 EVO, allowing 870 EVO to provide better performance consistently.
Living up to the stellar reputation the Samsung EVO series has earned is no easy feat, but looking at the new 870 EVO we can see Samsung are still committed to having the best-in-class performance & reliability, making the 870 EVO ideal for everyday computing needs.
Now I know what some of you are thinking, I was thinking it too - how much better can a SATA solid-state drive get? Well, you'll be happy to know that Samsung has used a speed-optimised circuit design for the sixth-generation V-NAND that allows the 870 EVO SSD to achieve faster data transfer speed, improving by up to 10% when compared to the previous fifth-generation V-NAND. With this latest technology, the 870 EVO now delivers improved sequential performance with read up to 560 MB/s and write up to 530 MB/s.
Getting specific, and comparing the 860 EVO with 870 EVO in a PCMark Vantage Score benchmark we see a win for new 870 in every capacity too.
Via Samsung "Samsung designs all SSD components in-house to ensure that every component works smoothly and provides the optimal SSD for consumers. Additionally, 870 EVO adopts the enhanced 1xxL layer V-NAND characteristics and a refined new MKX controller with an advanced ECC algorithm promises to deliver worry-free endurance up to 2,400TB of total bytes written along with a 5-year limited warranty."
Getting into the nitty-gritty details of that 5-year warranty, the 870 EVO does indeed have an industry-leading warranty which supports a massive amount writing to the SSD, though it's important to note that it does vary a bit depending on the compacity of the drive. (but it's all pretty massive)
|SSD Model||Total Bytes Written (TBW)|
|250GB 870 EVO SSD||150TB TBW|
|500GB 870 EVO SSD||300TB TBW|
|1TB 870 EVO SSD||600TB TBW|
|2TB 870 EVO SSD||1,200TB TBW|
|4TB 870 EVO SSD||2,400TB TBW|
Guaranteed Endurance means Samsung guarantees not only the lifetime but also the performance within the TBW rating.
Samsung is unique in the way that they produce every SSD component, including NAND, DRAM, controllers and firmware, in-house. The accumulated experience that comes with this expertise means Samsung can easily adjust the development process to ensure every part works seamlessly, ultimately delivering the best in SSDs.
The end result is a solid-state drive that leads the market in performance, endurance and reliability - the Samsung 870 EVO SSD.
